Development

As you first start looking into downloading a new emulator, it’s pretty important to look into who developed it. Is it an open-source emulator or a closed-source emulator? Was it created by people who have a reputation in their field? How to install diablo 2 mods on mac os. This information will often tell you whether or not the emulator will be kept up to date for future use.

Yuzu Emulator

Yuzu is an open-source emulator, meaning that the source code can be accessed, improved and studied by anyone. The emulator itself was first announced back at the beginning of 2018 and has been creating waves ever since, with Team Yuzu leading the way into a new area.

The team was previously known for their popular Nintendo 3DS emulator, Citra. When taking a look at the code, it’s easy to see that quite a few snippets of code are shared between both platforms.

Cemu Emulator

Cemu is a closed-source emulator, meaning that the source code cannot be legally modified as Team Cemu have intellectual property rights. The Cemu Emulator was first released back at the end of 2015 and it has been frequently updated ever since, with the publishers earning enough to work on the emulator on a full-time basis.

Behind Cemu, we can see GPU developer Exzap and audio, core and emulation developer, Petergov. The development behind Cemu has never stopped, with 4K emulation having been achieved back at the start of 2017.

Updates

Every now and then, an emulator is released that never gets updated. This isn’t the best situation, especially when you consider the fact that emulator updates are essential for making sure you can play a lot of games.

Yuzu Emulator

Given that Yuzu is an open-source emulator, some updates may require a little bit of fishing. There are people out there who are really good at modifying the source code themselves, fixing issues and making sure that everything runs smoothly.

With monthly progress reports, we can see that Team Yuzu pays a lot of attention to their platform. In the most recent update (July 2020), we can see rewrites to critical components, fixes for individual games and even a GPU Virtual Memory Manager that fixes a lot of bugs that Yuzu users have been encountering. These bugs include things like missing graphics and terrain issues.

As you can see from the Yuzu Emulator website, Yuzu are really good at giving credit where credit is due. When one of their users patches something or is working on a future project, they are incredibly open about that. At this moment, the Texture Catch is being rewritten for the emulator.

Cemu Emulator

Given that there is a team working full-time behind the scenes on Cemu Emulator, it’s easy to see how it gets updated as frequently as it does. With bi-monthly updates, they’re good at getting on top of things and making sure that games are running as well as they can be.

The past several updates have included some minor audio bug fixes and graphics fixes, as well as a new GPU buffer cache and Vulkan/OpenGL fixes.

Compatibility

Before you download any emulator, you need to make sure that it is compatible with your system. Some emulators are better than others in this category, as they are compatible with a lot of different systems and graphics cards. Others leave a lot to be desired, to say the least.

System Requirements

For the Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu, you need to make sure that your system can live up to its demands. It is a pretty demanding piece of experimental software, with separate options for both Windows and Linux.

If you’re downloading Yuzu with Windows, you need to make sure that your operating system is Windows 7, 8 or 10 (64-bit). You’re also going to need 8GB of RAM at a minimum and an i5 processor to make sure that it runs smoothly.

Just like Yuzu, the Cemu Wii U emulator can only run on 64-bit operating systems. Naturally, the better your own equipment, the better Cemu will run. It would be advisable to make sure that you have (at the very least) an i5 processor or an AMD Ryzen 3. Non-Ryzen AMD chips are not recommended by Cemu at this point. This is because the single-core processing speed isn’t fast enough to match the demands of the games themselves. You also need to make sure that you have at least 8GB of RAM.

Graphics Card Compatibility

One thing that both Cemu and Yuzu have in common is the fact that you need a good graphics card for both of them. If you don’t have a good graphics card, you’re going to struggle with running any game on your emulator. Generally speaking, NVIDIA GPUs are recommended by both sets of software developers. This is because they don’t have as much of a heavy impact on the CPU as other graphics cards do.

With Cemu, a NVIDIA GTX 700 is recommended as an absolute minimum, but something slightly more powerful will only ever improve your gaming experience. With Yuzu, a NVIDIA GTX 789 should be the minimum. Games can be very demanding and you should really put what you can into your graphics card to ensure that you have more fun!

While we do think that both of these emulators work really well, Cemu is the one that we always find ourselves going back to. The sheer number of popular titles and the quality of the graphics on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (with the right graphics card) make it a great option for most gamers.
